A 61-year-old man who had just wrapped up his entire professional life, became a senior citizen, and was thinking of leading a life free of worries, had no idea that there were some serious worries on the cards. One day, as he was doing his daily chores, he coughed a little; after two to three minutes, he coughed again , and this time he saw a little blood. Even though he ignored it, it got registered in his mind. Then one night, he coughed again. Now he had severe pain in his chest. He connected the dots: the blood and now such severe pain- something was definitely wrong. He decided to go for a checkup in Bangalore. The doctor performed a bronchoscopy and then a biopsy.
Watch the patient’s journey from hardship to healing
Little did he know that his life was about to take a harsh turn. The biopsy reported stage three lung cancer. Everything changed in that one moment. What began as a mild cough soon became a life-altering diagnosis. He started questioning every past decision that he took, every action that he had performed. Soon, thousands of despondent thoughts flooded his mind. Everything seemed confusing. Will he live? Will he die? How painful will everything be from now onwards? He had always come across people saying that stage three and four cancer patients rarely lived. Now, he was living their pain.
With a heavy heart, he listened to the doctor talk about chemotherapy, the doses, and what percentage of survival rate is associated with which treatment at which stage. He had no other option but to go for chemotherapy; however, he wanted to take the chemotherapy in Siliguri, near his home. With the chemotherapy regimen prescribed by the doctor, he came to Hope and Heal Hospital and consulted Dr. Saptarshi. The doctor agreed to administer the chemotherapy dose as prescribed by the patient’s doctor in Bangalore.
However, after two rounds of chemotherapy, the patient fell ill, so he decided to continue the treatment at Hope and Heal. Since the patient was not getting better with the chemotherapy dosage, Dr. Saptarshi Ghosh changed the chemotherapy regimen. He prescribed 5-6 weekly chemotherapy and 30 rounds of radiation therapy. The patient responded well to this changed treatment. Since then, the patient has been feeling mostly completely healthy. He can do all his work and has no major issues.
For the patient, what stood out was that Dr. Saptarshi explains everything clearly and his treatment is top-notch. Another major cause of worry for the patient was the availability of good food on the hospital premises. This worry was allayed by the presence of a good canteen in the hospital area. The patient liked the food very much.
The patient remarked that “ people should not go out of the state to get good treatment for cancer because everything is available at Hope and Heal”.The patient also mentioned that the hospital has excellent doctors for a wide variety of treatments. All their machines and instruments are very good. The staff was polite, and everything was convenient for the patient.
According to Dr. Saptarshi’s point of view, a consultant clinical oncologist at Hope and Heal Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, the patient is a living example of how well radiation and chemotherapy work for stage three lung cancer. With these therapies, they are now able to cure or keep dreaded diseases like lung cancer under control.
For the patient, the therapies worked really well such that even after 2 years, the disease has not shown any signs of progression. However, they do not always know what will work for the patient; therefore, do not think that only external methods will work or that doctors nearby the home will not be able to understand the situation. All types of treatments are now available at Hope and Heal. Thus, it is advisable to seek treatment nearby, as good hospitals and doctors are providing effective treatment in Siliguri and North Bengal. The patients have to trust the doctors and try to get the treatment near their home without wasting money on going outside the state for treatment.
The patient’s experience highlights the significance of timely diagnosis, a personalized treatment plan, and regular follow-ups throughout the treatment. It demonstrates the importance of receiving cancer care near home, when appropriate cancer treatment facilities are available and experienced medical professionals are available locally.
