At what age should I start getting mammograms?
Most guidelines suggest women at average risk start regular mammograms at 40, repeated every one to two years. If a close relative had breast or ovarian cancer, your doctor may suggest starting earlier.
Does a mammogram hurt?
The breast is pressed between two plates for a few seconds, which can feel uncomfortable. Booking a week after your period, when breasts are less tender, helps. Our technologists are all women and will go at your pace.
Is the radiation from a mammogram safe?
A mammogram uses a very low dose of radiation. The benefit of finding cancer early is far greater than the small risk from the dose.
I found a lump. Does that mean I have cancer?
Most breast lumps are not cancer. Cysts and fibroadenomas are common. But any new lump or change should be checked by a doctor within two weeks, so please book an exam.
Can men get breast cancer?
Yes, though it's rare. Men who notice a lump, nipple change or discharge should see a doctor. Our free clinical exam is open to men too.
What should I bring to my screening?
Any previous mammogram or ultrasound reports, a list of medicines you take and a photo ID. Please skip deodorant, powder or lotion on the day, as they can show up on the images.
